Every Contact Matters

We try to help whenever we can, but we're not always the best people to call in every situation.

When not to call us

Need to discuss an abandoned car or someone's bad parking? Contact your local council.

Need to discuss an untaxed car? Tell the DVLA.

Found a lost dog? Speak to your local council.

Suffering noisy neighbours? Report them to your council's environmental health team.

When to call us

In an emergency - always contact 999.

Emergency situations like these:

  • there is an immediate danger to life

  • someone is using violence or is threatening to be violent

  • a road traffic collision where life is at risk, or the road is blocked

  • a crime is happening right now, like a house burglary or a theft

  • Contact 999

  • 999 Phone

  • 999 BSL - BSL Video Relay (Download the App or click here: 999 BSL )

  • 999 SMS/Text (Must pre-register emergencySMS service )

  • 18000 Minicom/Textphone

  •

Have you called 999 but just seen the police arrive?

Don't hang up! Stay on the line and let us know that you're ok and that you have seen officers are in attendance.

We can spend about 20 minutes tracking down each caller who abandons their 999 call, to check they're safe.

If you dial 999, stay on the line.

    Mistake calls

Many modern phones have safety features which can call emergency services - even if the screen is locked.

If this happens, don't hang up! Stay on the line and let us know you're ok.

We can spend about 30 minutes tracking down each caller who abandons their 999 call to check they're safe, and this is time we need to spend answering 999 calls.

If you dial 999, stay on the line.

    When to contact us online

Please consider going online to make a report, or to find information, so that we can keep the phone lines free for people without internet access.

It can also be much quicker - if you call us, you may find our contact centres are very busy and that you have to wait in a queue. Using one of our online contact options will save you time.

Every contact we receive is answered by a member of our team, whether online or on the phone.

Completing a form means we have all the information we need to respond to your report.
